One Planet - Winter Lite -9 Sleeping Bag (Regular)
This is the most thermally-efficient shell with a water-resistant outer in the One Planet range – a must for anyone heading above the snowline. The mummy shape hugs the body, eliminating dead space, whilst the vertical baffles stop unintentional down movement over the course of the night. Super breathable, water-resistant Pertex® Endurance forms the outer, and the inner is made from the sexy, silky and lightweight 15-denier Vapour Vent. The three-dimensional neck muff keeps your warm air in, while the removable pillow slip solves the ‘camping pillow’ dilemma.
If you are a warm sleeper, wear clothes to bed or need a lightweight bag for high performance in more moderate conditions, then check out the Winter Lite -9.
Duck or goose: it's time to get down!
Once you’ve decided this is your perfect bag, it’s time to weigh up (or down…) your options. The Winter Lite now comes with the choice of two fills: 750+ loft duck or 800+ loft goose. Our duck fill will produce an excellent, well-priced bag, while the goose down will reduce your bag’s packed weight and size, and soothe you off to sleep with lullabies of luxury. (Click here for more details about loft and down.)
As a nice round figure, the 800 loft goose down will perform about seven per cent better than the 750 loft duck. Therefore, the duck down bag will need more fill to maintain the same temperature rating as the goose, adding approximately three and a half per cent to the total weight of the bag. However, this duck-fill bag will cost up to 20 per cent less, making it a great value option.
To keep it simple, here’s a guide to One Planet references.
Loft: a measure of how efficiently the down traps air. The higher the loft, the ‘fluffier’ the down and the better the insulating power.
Composition: the ratio of down to feather in a bag, given as a percentage. For example, 90 per cent down, ten per cent feather.
Species: goose down generally achieves better loft than duck, with the best down coming from mature, free-range birds from extremely cold climates.
The quality of down in a sleeping bag makes a huge difference to the performance of the bag, in terms of warmth, weight, durability and compactness. However, often there is very little information provided about a bag’s fill, making it very hard to compare.
All down used in One Planet products is independently tested by the IDFL (International Down and Feather Laboratory and Institute) for loft, composition, species and cleanliness. Our test results are accurately recorded on the quality label inside the foot of each sleeping bag. (Please note: traces of down and or feather of different species and colour than that noted on the bag may occur.)
One Planet sleeping bags use four qualities of down.
Duck – 700+ loft 700 loft (in³/oz US) or 380 (cm³/g EU) Our best value down. Used for applications where minimum weight and packed size is not critical.
Duck – 750+ loft 750 loft (in³/oz US) or 414 (cm³/g EU) This down has excellent compactability and loft recovery, with a long user life.
Goose – 800+ loft 800 loft (in³/oz US) or 424 (cm³/g EU) Same characteristics as the 750 loft duck down, just a little better and a little more expensive.
Goose – 850+ loft 850+ loft (in³/oz US) or 447 (cm³/g EU) Very extravagant! Used in our Customline bags.
Fill ratio
Most people move in their sleep, so loading the top of the bag with lots of extra down isn’t necessarily effective. We use a fill ratio of approximately 55/45, with 55 per cent of the fill in the top of the bag where it provides maximum warmth.
Filled to order
One Planet sleeping bags are hand-filled, to order, in our Melbourne factory. This dramatically reduces the time a bag is spent compressed in its stuff sack.
All One Planet down sleeping bags (except the Booster Bag series) use sewn-off box wall baffles made from Baffletex, a lightweight mesh fabric that is extremely strong for its weight. Baffletex is air-permeable, with a one-way stretch knit that serves a number of purposes. The one-way stretch allows fill material to loft to its full potential, without leaving gaps. It also acts as a shock absorber within the bag, preventing damage from baffle blow-out, while the texture of the mesh 'grabs' the fill material and minimises shifting.
Zips
All One Planet sleeping bags use YKK zips, because the last thing you need is a busted zip… The zips are bi-directional, with twin zip sliders allowing you to vent the bag from the foot on balmy nights. (The exceptions are the Cocoon, which only has a half zip, the Winter Lite where the zip does not go across the feet, and the Stowaway and Booster which have one-way, continuous zips.)
Providing you have a left- and right-hand zip opening, most of the range will zip together. (However, joining two bags together will actually decrease their thermal efficiency. Cocoon, Stowaway, and Booster bags will not zip to each other, or any other bag.) The zip pulls glow in the dark to save fumbling in the dark, while fabric near the zip is firmly sewn off to prevent the slider snagging.
One Planet mummy and tapered rectangular bags have ground-level zips and seams, with the vertical baffles wrapping right over your body to the ground. In contrast, the side seams of conventional bags are at the midpoint of the bag, allowing the insulation in the bottom of the bag to fall down away from the seam, creating cold spots.
Differential cut
All One Planet sleeping bags have a differential cut, with the inner fabric cut narrower than the outer shell. This reduces fabric waste, promotes proper lofting of the down, and protects the fill from compression.
Hood and foot
‘If your feet are cold, put on a hat.’ So the saying goes, and if you substitute hood for hat, you’ll understand why we go to so much effort. The hoods on all mummy and tapered rectangular bags are shaped to contour to the head, leaving only the nose and mouth exposed. They integrate with the neck muff and shoulders and can be cinched tight without compressing the fill. Three-dimensional foot cavities are used on all One Planet mummy and tapered rectangular bags (except the Stowaway), preventing your toes from compressing the down and causing cold spots (and cold toes!)
Pillow slip
The Bush Lite, Cocoon, Winter Lite and Zephyr all come with a pillow slip that simply clips into position. Fill it with spare clothing to make the perfect camping pillow, and throw it into the washing machine when it gets dirty.
Inner fabric
All sleeping bag inners are made from highly breathable, robust Vapour Vent (V2) fabric. We use three weights of V2 fabric: V2-15, V2-30 and V2-50 denier. The tight weave of the fabrics make them ‘downproof by construction’: coatings (which can affect breathability) are not required. A non-downproof version of V2-30 is used in our synthetic range.
Draft tube and neck muff
One Planet sleeping bags use dual, D-shaped, three-dimensional draft tubes to stop any cold breezes at the zip. (The Robin Hoodless and Stowaway have a single draft tube, while the Booster bags don’t have any.) Fabric near the zip is firmly sewn-off to prevent the slider snagging.
All One Planet bags (except the Booster, Robin Hoodless and Stowaway) have three-dimensional neck muffs: an elasticised collar that works independently to the hood, stopping warm air escaping from the neck and shoulders when you move during the night.
Internal security pocket
All One Planet sleeping bags have an internal zippered security pocket. It is the perfect size for keeping your passport, cash, small electronics and other vital items out of harm’s way while you sleep. In sub-zero temperatures the pocket is also fantastic for keeping batteries operational and contact lenses from freezing.
Mummy shaped bags
The Cocoon and Winter Lite are One Planet’s mummy-shaped bags, and the most thermally-efficient bags in our range. Designed to hug your body shape, these bags give the most warmth for their fill but have the least internal space. A combination of vertical and horizontal baffles is used, preventing the fill from shifting during use. The vertical chest baffles, which run from the neck to the waist, prevent the down from drifting from the highpoints of the bag (created by your torso) down to the sides of the bag during the night, causing cold spots. The baffles are also ‘sewn-off’, which prevents the fill from moving from the top to the base of the bag. However, this means the fill cannot be shifted as conditions dictate. The Winter Lite has a zip which runs the full length of the side whilst the Cocoon only has a half zip.
Tapered rectangular
The One Planet tapered rectangular bags provide a combination of efficiency and comfort, allowing more wriggle room and versatility but with an increase in size and weight. Most of our tapered rectangular bags use vertical chest baffles to keep the fill where it is needed. However, the Booster, Camp Lite and Stowaway use V-shaped baffles, which prevent the down from moving more efficiently than the traditional horizontal baffle while still allowing it to be moved within the bag to suit conditions.
The One Planet tapered rectangular range includes the Booster, Bungle, Bush Lite, Camp Lite, Stowaway and Zephyr down bags, as well as the whole synthetic range.
Rectangular bags
Rectangular bags are spacious and comfy, with the good old rectangle providing extra space for those who really like to move. Our versatile, cosmopolitan Robin Hoodless is designed for car-based camping or travelling where packed size and weight are less of an issue. In these conditions, there’s no need for a technical hood so we’ve removed it – the hood is a sleeve only, so a pillow can be inserted and will definitely stay put. V-shaped baffles help prevent the down from shifting unintentionally, whilst it can still be moved from top to bottom as conditions dictate. When unzipped, this style of bag makes a great queen-size doona: perfect for when you’re staying put for a while and want the comforts of home.
